Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma has invited the KSU for talks on their 5-point agenda after a violent bike rally. The government maintains a firm stance on law and order. Normal vehicular movement between Assam and Meghalaya has been restored.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday announced that the state government has officially extended an invitation to the Khasi Students' Union (KSU) for direct talks to address their five-point agenda. The administration anticipates a response from the student body by Monday evening or Tuesday. The announcement follows recent violent incidents during a bike rally on August 19, which left several areas disrupted.

Government Stance on Talks and Law and Order

While the government aims to clear misunderstandings and clarify its actions, the Chief Minister maintained a firm stance on law and order. The government is set to discuss all five KSU demands, noting that action has already been initiated on most points. Sangma attributed recent tensions to a lack of communication between both parties.

Addressing demands regarding the arrest of KSU leaders and the invocation of the Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order (MMPO) and Meghalaya Preventive Detention Act (MPDA), the Chief Minister emphasised that "the law will take its own course." He reiterated that the government will not modify legal proceedings under external pressure.

Police have identified and acted against five masked agitators involved in the August 19 violence. Investigations to apprehend remaining offenders are actively ongoing. Rules and conditions for granting permits for public rallies and processions will be significantly tightened.

CM Rejects Intelligence Lapse Claims

While adequate security forces were deployed along the designated route, monitoring became challenging as incidents scattered across multiple locations. Sangma rejected claims that the violence stemmed from an intelligence lapse, stating that while authorities expected a peaceful demonstration, the scale of violence and unprovoked behaviour of rioters took law enforcement off guard.

Vehicular Movement with Assam Restored

Earlier, Assam Minister Atul Bora announced that normal vehicular movement has been restored between Assam and Meghalaya, as well as across Meghalaya, following successful discussions between the state government and various protesting organisations.

Taking to X, Bora stated that Meghalaya's Deputy Chief Minister, S Dhar, had communicated the development. Assam Minister Atul Bora expressed his sincere gratitude to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his prompt and decisive intervention in the matter. He also thanked Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma for his commitment and constructive approach towards resolving the crisis.

"I am pleased to share that normal vehicular movement has now been restored between Assam & Meghalaya, as well as across Meghalaya. Hon'ble Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya Shri S. Dhar conveyed this to me this evening, following the Government of Meghalaya's deliberations with protesting organisations in the State. I express my sincere gratitude to Hon'ble Chief Minister Dr. @himantabiswafor his prompt and decisive intervention. I also thank Hon'ble Meghalaya Chief Minister Shri @SangmaConradfor his commitment and constructive approach towards resolving the situation," he posted on X.

Bora extended his appreciation to the various organisations and stakeholders in both states for responding positively to peace appeals and withdrawing the road blockades. He emphasised that the restoration of normalcy was a testament to the deep-rooted ties between the two regions.
