Concerned about repeated cases of alleged dowry harassment throughout the state, Kerala Assembly Leader VD Satheesan on Friday opened a "anti-dowry assistance centre" at his office here to assist afflicted women.

Women who have suffered mental and physical violence as a result of dowry can obtain free legal counsel at the help desk by dialling the specified toll-free number.

Satheesan said after launching the project with state Congress veteran and former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and playback singer Aparna Rajeev that a network of 87 attorneys affiliated to various courts in the state will offer essential legal help at the desk for the poor.

The Leader of the Opposition asked other institutions and organisations in the state to set up similar assistance centres.

Criticizing the tradition of donating and receiving dowry, he stated that dowry-related killings and suicides had lately been recorded in the southern state. He further stated that marriages after providing and accepting dowry should be prohibited in Kerala. Boys and girls should make the decision not to accept or offer dowry, he added.

He went on to say that women should be convinced that divorce is preferable than suicide in the name of dowry, and that society should give them the confidence to face life's problems.

Vismaya, an Ayurveda medical student who was discovered dead at her husband's residence under unexplained circumstances after complaining of dowry harassment, has sparked considerable concern in the state.
