The premium engineering institute of India, Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) has claimed that fee waivers and financial aid provided to economically weaker students are causing financial stress to the institutions and have urged the government to provide direct reimbursements and also give interest-free loans to such students.

According to a media report, the IITs in a recommendation made to the Government stated that the fee waivers is consuming corpus funds of the institutes.

At the 155th IITs directors' meeting at the IIT Kanpur, the directors of the 16 IITs unanimously decided to send this proposal for IIT Council, the apex body of this reputed institution.

Currently, SC/ST and physically disadvantaged students of IITs get full exemption from tuition fee. Students whose household income is below ₹9 lakh for five years also receives interest subvention on their education loan. All these expenses are compensated by the IITs.
