West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday (February 25) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking revocation of the Union Education Ministry's directive.

The Education Ministry said on January 15 that publicly-funded universities will have to get the prior consent of the ministry if they want to hold online global conferences on issues pertaining to the security of the country or matters directly related to India’s internal matters.

Mamata Banerjee on Thursday protested against the Centre's decision. In her words, “The Centre has taken this step without informing the state. This is contrary to the federal structure. The state should have been consulted before taking this step. This unconstitutional step of the Centre should be withdrawn.”

In the letter to PM Modi, Banerjee wrote, "Our universities must enjoy the highest possible degree of self-governance and freedom.”

At the same time, expressing anger against the Centre, Mamata said in the letter that digital media is very important for students and teachers in remote villages and small towns. If restrictions are imposed on it, students will be deprived of the experience of different people in the world. The exchange of knowledge will be affected. Restrictions must remain. But the move is an attempt to centralize education. This decision must be reversed.

Earlier, Mamata had written a letter to the Prime Minister on Wednesday (February 24). In the letter, Mamata sought permission from the central government to vaccinate all the people of the state before assembly polls. The Centre has not yet responded to the letter. Within 24 hours of that letter, the Chief Minister wrote a letter to the Prime Minister again.
