Lionel Messi is the Argentine god of football and a modern-day great of the sport alongside Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo. He is famous for holding numerous goal-scoring records, be it at the club and international level.

Messi has not had the same success at the international level as the club. However, he still happens to be Argentina's top scorer in international football.

Meanwhile, in an exciting scenario, besides battling Ronaldo, he is also fighting active Indian footballing legend Sunil Chhetri at the international level. Also, the Argentine surpassed him following his brace in the Copa America 2021 clash against Bolivia on Monday.

Following the brace, Messi has surpassed Chhetri in terms of international goals. While the Argentine has scored 75, the Indian is a goal short.

Furthermore, Messi is currently the third-highest among active footballers in international goals, preceded by UAE's Ali Mabkhout (76) and Ronaldo (109). Overall, he is ranked the joint-ninth and is expected to rise and challenge the top spot in the coming days.

Currently, Ronaldo is the favourite to finish as the all-time top scorer at the same level. While he is now tied with legendary former Iranian Ali Daei, all he needs is a goal to surpass him, while he is expected to take the tally past 120.
