La Liga 2020-21: Barcelona drops points but Lionel Messi scripts record
Lionel Messi hails from Argentina and has been playing for Barcelona since his childhood. He is one of the great modern-day footballers, as he holds countless records to his name. However, his club seems to be struggling in La Liga this season, placed third.
Argentine superstar Lionel Messi of Barcelona is undoubtedly one of the modern-day greats in the sport of football. While he already holds innumerable records to his name, he continues to script further with almost every passing game.
On Sunday, Barca was up against 14th-placed Cadiz at Camp Nou. However, the Catalans looked lacklustre, which has been its story this season, as, despite Messi scoring a goal, it settled for a pale 1-1 draw.
However, Messi scripted a couple of records in the game, along with the goal. It was Messi's 506th appearance for the side in the La Liga, as he has become the Catalans' most featured player in the tournament, going past the previous record of 505 by Xavi.
Overall, Messi is placed ninth in the most La Liga appearances table. He would look to eye the all-time record of 622 by former Spanish goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta. However, it might turn out to be a distant dream, considering the strong possibility of Messi leaving the club this summer.
Also, in another record that was extended, the goal allowed him to score against a 38th different opponent in the competition.
As for Barcelona, it has endured a woeful season so far. Currently placed third, it has managed to win 14 off 23 and lost four, as it is eight points behind league leader Atletico Madrid while defending champion Real Madrid is on second.
