As per Hussain Zaidi's Mafia Queen of Mumbai, Gangubai eloped with her father's accountant at the tender age of 16 to come to Mumbai and settle down.
But sadly he sold her for Rs 500 and was forced to become a sex worker. Gangubai wanted to act in Bollywood films, which brought her to the city of dreams in Mumbai.
After many days of misery, Gangubai made a name for herself in the brothel business.The book mentions that Gangubai made strong connections with the underworld. She was brutally raped by a member of Karim Lala's gang. He was an underworld don who operated Liquor dens, gambling, and extortion rackets.
After that incident, Gangubai went to Karim Lala for justice and ended up being his Rakhi sister. She was later given Kamathipura and she became the famous Mafia Queen. She went onto operating a sex racket in Hera Mandi red light district and owned a brothel in Mumbai's Kamathipura.
The fact about Gangubai was that she never kept a girl against her consent in her brothel. She dedicated a large part of her life to working for the betterment of sex workers in Kamathipura.She became influential and affluent enough to wear a saree with a golden border and blouse with a button of gold.
She was also the only woman in the brothel to ride a black Bentley. Gangubai even made a speech asking Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru to address the issues of sex workers and prostitution.
