The actor is a polyglot. He is known for effortless fluency in seven languages. Apart from his mother tongue Kannada, he knows how to speak Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Marathi, Hindi and English.

In the year 1994, Raj married actress Lalitha Kumari. They have three children together. However, they took a divorce in 2009. A year later, he married Pony Verma and has a son name Vedhanth.

He started his career in serials. He commenced with Kannada Doordarshan, where he essayed various serials like Bisilu Kudure and Guddada Bhootha. Later on, he did minor supporting roles in films like Raamachari and Kishkarsha.

His original surname is not Raj; he changed his surname to Raj on the advice of Tamil film director K Balachander.

His first big break in Bollywood was in the 2004 multi-starrer movie Khakee. The film also starred Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar and Tushar Kapoor.

Prakash Raj has adopted several villages of Kondareddypalle in Mahabubnagar District, Telangana state and Bandlarahatti in Chitradurga district in Karnataka district. The actor adopted these villages to work for their development and welfare.
