Filmmaker Kamal will direct the movie. According to latest reports, the team has roped in Manju Warrier to play the protagonist in Aami. An iconoclast, Kamala Das, who died in 2009, had embraced Islam towards the end of her life and changed her name to Kamala Surayya.

Kamal has also confirmed the news in the recent interview given to a leading online portal. This will be their third film together.

Manju Warrier has also agreed to do the project and signed the movie a few days back.

Kamal told The New Indian Express that Manju was chosen because she has some character resemblance with Kamala Das. “I expect Manju will easily get under the skin of the character,” said the director.

Manju will replace The Dirty Picture actress Vidya Balan, who was the director’s first choice to play the title role. However, she walked out of the film mentioning creative differences. Vidya’s spokesperson was quoted as saying that the actress had quit the movie as she and the director had “divergent approaches to the method”.

On the other hand, Kamal said he had little knowledge as to what led her to quit the film just days before it was scheduled to go on the floors.

Reportedly, it is said that was because the movie was objected by the right-wing groups. Later, Kamal expressed his unhappiness over Vidya’s decision, calling it “unprofessional and unethical.”

The report also said that the film would go on the floors on March 20 and the childhood portions of the poet’s life will be shot first.
