  • With the storyline not progressing drastically, Dragonstone serves more as an episode that establishes the return of the TV show.
  • Cersei Lannister finds herself surrounded by enemies from all sides of her kingdom.
  • While Arya Stark heads to Westeros to continue crossing names off her list, Jon Snow and Sansa Stark try to organize their defenses.

Game of Thrones is back and we couldn’t be happier. Despite the show sometimes being a tad over the top, there’s something strangely addictive about the show that’s been making millions of fans come back for more. The season 7 premiere, Dragonstone captures that sentiment perfectly. Despite not much really happening throughout the episode (by GOT standards), it still makes for a compelling hour of entertainment. With the storyline not progressing drastically, Dragonstone serves more as an episode that establishes the return of the TV show. The episode is full of moments foretold but helps build the anticipation to what’s yet to happen.

While Arya Stark heads to Westeros to continue crossing names off her list, Jon Snow and Sansa Stark try to organize their defenses against their enemies north of the wall while getting an unpleasant reminder of their enemies in the south. Cersei Lannister finds herself surrounded by enemies from all sides of her kingdom and in a desperate need of allies. Daenerys Targaryen returns home to her ancestral home which is built on top a whole lot of dragon-glass, which Jon needs to fight the white walkers (you can see where this is going).

Special mention needs to be given to Ed Sheeran. With his cameo, we can safely say that subtlety, while never GOT’s forte, is clearly dead. The choice to make his presence obvious breaks the spell of the GOT universe for a moment. Maybe, casting a singer as a singing soldier is just not convincing enough?

All in all, a great start to the season and a reminder of why this show is so awesome. While it’s started off slowly, season 7 promises to be the most explosive season yet. Stay tuned for our weekly reviews of the show.
