PAN-Aadhaar linking: If not done, pay Rs 1000 from July 1; Here's how to link the two

The Central Board of Direct Taxes has announced a Rs 500 penalty cost for anyone who connect their PAN and Aadhaar after March 31 and before June 30, 2022. However, anyone who links the papers after that date, i.e. after July 1, would have to pay a Rs 1,000 penalty.

According to the government regulation, every Indian resident is obligated to connect two of their key papers - Permanent Account Number or PAN Card and Aadhaar Card. The Income Tax Department had set a deadline of March 31, 2022 to connect PAN and Aadhaar, which was thereafter extended. To the relief of individuals who had not yet completed the connection of the two databases, the Centre on March 29 extended the deadline to March 31, 2023. There is, however, a catch.

How to link PAN-Aadhaar card online: 

  • Visit the I-T department's e-filing portal (www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in) - Click on 'Link Aadhaar' under the 'Quick Links' section
  • Enter the PAN, Aadhaar number, and other needed data
  • Tick the box only if your birth year is shown on your Aadhaar card, and then click the check box to consent to UIDAI validating your Aadhaar data.
  • Enter the captcha code displayed on your screen
  • Select the 'Link Aadhaar' button.

How can you check if PAN and Aadhaar have been linked?

  • Go to the official website: incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/aadhaarstatus
  • Enter your PAN and Aadhaar data - Select 'View Link Aadhaar Status'
  • The following screen will show the status of the connecting.

If the two are not linked by the new date, a person's PAN may become inoperative. According to a CBDT circular dated March 30, 2022, in such a circumstance, the individual will be "unable to give, intimate, or cite his PAN and shall be subject to all the consequences under the Act for such failure."
