Karnataka HC says no religious attire till final judgment, adjourns hijab hearing till Monday

The three-judge bench of the Karnataka HC was hearing the petitions questioning the ban on wearing of ‘hijabs’ (headscarves) by students in colleges.


The Karnataka High Court on Thursday adjourned the hearing on the hijab row case after hearing senior advocates Sanjay Hegde and Devadatt Kamat. The Court said the matter will be heard again on Monday, February 14.

The Court said, till the inquiry is complete, no religious symbols should be used. The HC favours to give interim order and will give orders in few days.

The Court further said it will pass an order directing reopening of colleges, and asked students not to insist on wearing such religious things till the disposal of the matter. The Court said peace and tranquillity must be restored. 

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court had declined a prayer to urgently transfer the cases from the high court to the apex court. The state cabinet too Wednesday decided to await the court verdict before taking any decision on the issue.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Bommai will hold a meeting with Education Minister BC Nagesh and Home Minister Araga Jnanendra to decide on the closure of schools. 

Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra said, “Police have been directed to ensure law and order while maintaining extreme restraint in dealing with students. Students shouldn’t fall prey to communal elements who are hell-bent on making the hijab issue a tool to disturb communal harmony.”

On the other hand, the Bengaluru police commissioner Kamal Pant has promulgated prohibitory orders under section 144 of the CrPC against any gathering, agitation, or protests of any type within the area of 200-metre radius from the gates of the schools, pre-university colleges, degree colleges or other similar educational institutions in Bengaluru City for a period of two weeks from Wednesday till February 22.
