Getting up from sleep with stiff joints is a frequent occurrence, especially when one engages in physical activity, has been sitting for a long period of time, or sleeps in an uncomfortable position. However, the type of stiffness experienced in the mornings, and its duration can be useful in determining what is happening inside your joints. While stiffness is normal at times, in other situations, it can be indicative of some condition of the joints.
Stiffness that is slight and resolves itself within minutes of moving after waking from bed is normally harmless. This is because the body’s joints are inactive during the night while sleeping, causing stiffness in the muscles around them.
Stiffness can also be caused by physical exercise, overexertion or injury and in such cases, it gets better with light exercise and does not get worse over time.
Since osteoarthritis results from degeneration of the joints, the commonest time to experience pain is when one resumes movement after being inactive for some time.
Morning stiffness normally lasts up to 30 minutes only. The most commonly involved joints are the knees, hips, hands and spine. Pain is usually made worse by any activity, stair climbing, and standing for long periods of time.
If morning stiffness persists for more than 30-60 minutes in some cases, then it might need to be checked out further. This is because morning stiffness can be caused by inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, which results from the body’s immune system attacking its own joints.
Arthritis caused due to inflammation can result in joint swelling and warmth along with tenderness in several joints. Stiffness may be present especially in the hands, wrist, feet or other joints.
This is not the only indicator since persistent joint swelling, warmth or redness, decreased mobility, fatigue without an identifiable cause, fever or pain in several joints should not be considered a part of natural aging.
It is also crucial to pay attention if symptoms are gradually worsening or interfering with everyday life.
Morning stiffness can be alleviated by some gentle stretching exercises following awakening. Weight management and physical activity along with muscle strengthening in areas prone to joint problems can be helpful in maintaining joint health.
But, persistent morning stiffness, especially when lasting a long time, along with joint swelling and pain in several joints should be evaluated medically. The presence of inflammatory arthritis and other diseases may be recognized at an early stage.
