Hindus fume over Louis Vuitton's cowhide leather yoga mat

Synopsis

Louis Vuitton made a yoga mat which partly has cow's leather in it. That triggered a Hindu activist Rajan Zed, president of the Universal Society of Hinduism, he said, 'it's insensitive'.

As per his statement, "The scenario of yoga – a profound, sacred and ancient discipline introduced and nourished by Hinduism – being performed on a mat made from a killed cow is painful".

The Associated Press messaged Paris-based company, Louis Vuitton, to comment on his statement, but they did not immediately respond, which attracted many controversies.

In an e-mail to AP, Zed wrote, "should not be in the business of religious appropriation, sacrilege, mocking serious spiritual practices and ridiculing entire communities", wanting an apology from Louis Vuitton.

The yoga mat has been made mostly with leather and a strap with cowhide which costs USD 2,390 online.

Zed is the president of The Universal Society of Hinduism, which deals with the commercial misuse of sacred symbols. It is based on Reno, Nevada and it conducts campaigns regarding this issue.
