Synopsis

A January 2025 study reveals that individuals are productive for only 2 hours and 53 minutes of an 8-hour shift. The research identified top distractions like social media and reading news websites as major time consumers. 

A January 2025 research has placed a figure to what many people already believe i.e. the average office worker's productive hours. As per the study, the individual is productive for only 2 hours and 53 minutes of an 8-hour shift. Vouchercloud conducted a poll of 1,989 UK office workers over the age of 18, all of whom worked full-time in office positions. It concentrated on everyday routines, diversions, and how employees actually spent their time at work.

When asked explicitly, 79 per cent acknowledged to not being productive during the day. Only 21% said they remained productive from beginning to end. The study then examined what draws people away from employment. Respondents might select various choices.

A Look At Top Distractions

  • Checking social media: 47%
  • Reading news websites: 45%.
  • Discussing out-of-work activities with coworkers (38%).
  • Making hot drinks: 31%
  • Smoking breaks - 28%.
  • Text or instant messaging – 27%
  • Eating snacks - 25%
  • Making meals at the office - 24%.
  • Making calls to partners or friends (24%).
  • Looking for new jobs - 19%.

Food and tea breaks alone occupy a significant amount of time. On average, employees spend around 25 minutes each day preparing and eating snacks and drinks. The respondents also predicted how long these activities would take during a workday.

How Much Time Does Distraction Consume?

  • Checking social media: 44 minutes
  • Reading news websites - 1 hour, 5 minutes
  • Discussing out-of-work hobbies for 40 minutes
  • Making hot drinks: 17 minutes.
  • Smoking breaks: 23 minutes
  • Text or instant messaging: 14 minutes.
  • Eating snacks for 8 minutes.
  • Making meals takes 7 minutes.
  • Calls to partners or friends: 18 minutes.
  • Looking for new employment takes 26 minutes.

Just reading the news and going through social media may take nearly two hours.

Interestingly, not everyone thinks distractions are a negative thing. Only 35% claimed they could get through the day without them. The remaining 65 per cent claimed they couldn't. More over half of this group believed that taking breaks made the day more tolerable and even helped them stay productive later.
