An altercation in the family turned bloody in Suryanelli near Idukki on Saturday as a father shot his son with an unlicensed gun.

Achankunju shot his elder son Binu with an old, locally made gun after the youth allegedly had a quarrel with his sister-in-law. Binu, who suffered injuries to his lower torso, has been admitted to the Kottayam Medical College, while Achankunju is absconding.

The incident happened on Saturday night. Achankunju's younger son, who is a hotelier, had a love marriage recently despite Binu being against it, according to Manorama News. After the marriage, Binu, who is a bachelor, used to pick on his brother's wife often.

The same happened on Saturday night as well. Achankunju tried to pacify Binu several times but he refused to back away. Enraged, Achankunju shot Binu on the torso with an unlicenced gun the family had. Some of the neighbours, who gathered after hearing the gun fire, hospitalised Binu, while Achankunju fled the scene.

The police have recovered the gun from the Santhanpara area and are intensified the search for Achankunju. Binu's condition is now stable.
