4:01 pm: Man lost Rs 40 lakh in online courier scam

A person in Kollam lost more than 40 lakh rupees in an incident of extorting money by pretending to be a police officer and making a video call saying that the goods sent as a parcel contained MDMA.  The fraudsters made a video call to the person who sent the parcel, pretending to be a senior police officer of Mumbai Police's cyber wing. The video caller said the parcel contained drug paraphernalia, including MDMA.

3:30 pm: Kerala woman moves HC against husband, in-laws over 'instructions' to conceive male child

A woman recently approached the Kerala High Court against her husband, and her in-laws for allegedly giving instructions on how to conceive a male child. In her petition, the woman said that action should be taken against her husband and his parents for not just insisting that she conceive a good boy child but also giving her 'instructions' on how to do it. The case falls under the Pre-conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act (PC & PNDT Act) and the court sought directions from the state and the Centre while scheduling the next hearing on February 29. In her appeal, she mentions that her husband and his family gave her a note on the first day following their wedding that contained instructions on how to have a good boy child instead of a girl child.


3:00 pm: POCSO court rejects the bail plea of accused in Perinad rape case

The Pathanamthitta POCSO Special Court rejected the anticipatory bail application of ​​the accused in the Perinad rape case. The bail of Vishnu Lal (24), a native of Perinad was rejected. The case against Vishnu Lal is that he broke into the house of a minor girl and sexually assaulted her. 


2:25 pm: High Court cancels allotment of government land to Kallodi St. George Church in Wayanad

The High Court has revoked the allocation of government land to Kallodi St. George Church in Wayanad, which was granted in 2015. The court ordered the government to assess the market value of the 5.53 hectares of land, which was given to the church at a nominal rate of Rs 100 per acre. The church has been asked to indicate if it is willing to purchase the land at the determined market value.
 


1:23 pm:Kerala local body by-poll results: Major gains for LDF; BJP wins three seats

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) secured victories in 10 seats in by-elections to 23 local wards of the state. The by-election was held on Thursday (Feb 22) and the counting of votes took place today at 10 am. Notably, Ottasekharamangalam, Kunnanad in Thiruvananthapuram and Chadayamanagalam, Kuriyodu wards in Kollam are the other wards captured from the BJP by the LDF.  The UDF lost power in the 14th ward of the Nedumbassery panchayat after the LDF victory. Additionally, the LDF seized Kalpaka Nagar in Nedumbassery and Pathiyarkulangara  Muzhappilangad Panchayat in Mullassery. Read more


12:54 pm: IMD issues yellow alert in 9 districts as temperature rises in the state

The India Meteorological Center has warned that the temperature will remain high in the state in the coming days. The IMD has informed that the temperature is likely to rise in nine districts of the state today including Kollam, Alappuzha, Palakkad, up to 37 degrees Celsius, and Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode and Kannur districts with high temperature up to 36 degree Celsius (2 to 4 degrees Celsius more than normal). 


12:15 pm: 'He has no connection with party...': CPM State Secretary MV Govindan about accused in CPM local secretary murder

CPM State Secretary MV Govindan said that Abhilash, the accused in the murder of CPM local secretary PV Satyanathan in Koyilandy, Kozhikode, has no connection with the party. MV Govindan also said that there should be a comprehensive investigation into the murder. 


11:30 am: By-election Results 2024: LDF secures 23 local wards across the state

In the recent by-elections, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) secured victories in 23 local wards across the state, claiming 6 seats in total. Notably, LDF gained seats in various areas, including Vellar in Thiruvananthapuram municipality, Kunnanadu in Ottasekharamangalam panchayat, and Kuriyodu wards in Chadayamangalam panchayat. Additionally, LDF seized Kalpaka Nagar in Nedumbassery and Pathiyarkulangara  Muzhappilangad Panchayat in Mullassery. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) celebrated its first-ever victory in Mattannur Municipal Council, with the BJP securing Mattannur town ward from the Congress party.


10:43 am: First-year student thrashed by seniors for breaking bee hive in college; bees sting other students

A first-year student at Emmanuel College in Vazhichal was allegedly beaten up by senior students. Manu S. Kumar, a native of Neyyattinkara, was allegedly severely beaten up by senior students as he had thrown a piece of crumbled paper onto a bee hive next to the college building, causing numerous students to get stung by bees. 


10:12 am: KSRTC bus catches fire in Alappuzha

A KSRTC bus that was running on the Alappuzha-Kayamkulam route caught fire. The accident took place in front of MSM College. The bus was completely gutted in the fire.  The preliminary information is that the passengers were not injured. The driver noticed the smell coming from the bus and immediately stopped the bus and asked the passengers to get out.


9:58 am: 3 teachers suspended in connection with suicide of 13-year-old boy in Alappuzha

Three teachers were suspended in connection with the suicide of a 13-year-old boy in Alappuzha. The Child Welfare Committee (CWC) will take the teachers' statements today. The police had earlier taken the statements of the 13-year-old's classmates. The Child Rights Commission said SP has been asked for a detailed investigation. The commission also said that action will be taken if there is a motive for suicide. 


9:34 am: C-DIT suspended services of printing driving licenses, RC books due to financial crisis

Thiruvananthapuram: The Motor Vehicle Department in the state is facing a crisis due to financial strain as there is no money to print driving licenses and RC books. The Centre for Development of Imaging Technology (C-DIT), responsible for providing services to the department, has suspended its operations due to significant outstanding dues. The C-DIT's arrears amount to over Rs 6.5 crore for a year's worth of services.
 


9:00 am:  CPM local secretary murder: CPM calls for hartal today at Koyilandy

The CPM has called for a hartal in Koyilandy to protest against the murder of the CPM leader today. The CPM local secretary was hacked to death in Koyilandy, Kozhikode. PV Sathyanathan, Secretary of the Central Local Committee of Koyilandy Town, was killed. The murder took place during the Cheripuram temple festival at Koyilandi Peruvattur.


8:40 am: Kerala MVD to implement revised new driving test procedures from May 1; check

The Motor Vehicle Department has revised new procedures for driving tests in the state with strict regulations. The new changes will be effective from May 1. The decision to tighten driving license tests in Kerala follows recent statements by Minister KB Ganesh Kumar, who expressed his intention to reduce the number of driving licenses issued in the state. Minister Kumar emphasized the need for stricter tests, highlighting concerns that many license holders lack essential driving skills, such as proper parking and consideration for other road users. Read more


8:23 am: Former CPM member accused of killing CPM leader in Kozhikode

The police stated the accused, Abhilash, confessed that the CPM leader was hacked to death in Koyiland, Kozhikode, due to personal enmity. The accused testified that personal enmity led to conflicts within the party and that he acted alone in committing the murder. Abhilash, a former branch committee member of the party and a neighbor of Satyanathan, will undergo further questioning today.

CPM local secretary was hacked to death in Koyilandy, Kozhikode. PV Sathyanathan, Secretary of the Central Local Committee of Koyilandy Town, was killed. The murder took place during the Cheripuram temple festival at Koyilandi Peruvattur.
