Four school students killed, several injured as a cement-laden lorry crashes into a group of children near Karimba Higher Secondary School in Palakkad in Kerala.
Palakkad: Four schoolgirls have lost their lives after a lorry crashed into a group of children near the national highway in Panayambadam in Palakkad. The tragic incident occurred at approximately 4 pm today as the students were walking home from Karimba Higher Secondary School. The deceased have been identified as Irfana, Mitha, Rida, and Ayesha.
Eyewitnesses reported that the cement-laden lorry lost control and rammed into the group leaving some students trapped. The lorry then overturned into a roadside ditch. The vehicle overturned into a roadside ditch, with some children reportedly trapped beneath it. Rescue operations were immediately launched, and a crane was deployed to lift the lorry. After reports that five children were under the lorry, emergency workers worked swiftly to ensure no one was left trapped.
The bodies of the four girls have been shifted to Esaf Hospital in Thachampara. Meanwhile, the two lorry drivers, who were injured in the crash, have been taken to Mother Care Hospital, though their injuries are not considered serious.
Following the accident, locals, along with police and rescue teams, rushed to help the injured children, taking them to nearby hospitals. Despite these efforts, the four girls succumbed to their injuries, having been in critical condition after the collision. The crash caused a significant traffic jam on the national highway.
