The State Government has issued orders to formulate 49 new taluks, as announced in the budget, which will come into effect from Jan 2018, reported Kannada Prabha.

The existing taluks are 177 and the additional 49 taluks will take the total to 226. The demand to bifurcate larger taluks into smaller ones was pending since a decade. Smaller taluks will make the administration easier. Commissions had recommended 40 new taluks and nine were added. In Vijayapura itself seven new taluks are created.

The Vasudevarao Commisison in 1973, T M Hundekar Commission in 1984, P C Gaddigoudar Commission in 1986 and M P Prakash Commission in 2007 had recommended formation of new taluks. The Revenue Department was studying the recommendations. Accordingly, 40 taluks recommended by all the 4 commissions and nine taluks without any recommendations have been approved.

Only one change has been proposed in the 49 taluks announced in the State budget. The proposed Mudalagi town in Belagavi has been dropped. Hebri in Udupi district has been added. The decision has been taken based on the technical reports submitted by the respective DCs said higher officials of Revenue Department.
