Ex-Air Force officer attempts suicide at Bengaluru's Jalahalli metro station, rescued

Synopsis

A former Airforce officer, Anil Kumar Pandey, attempted suicide at Jalahalli metro station today. The quick response of the train pilot and rescue teams prevented a tragedy. Metro services were disrupted for 15 minutes, and normal operations resumed by 10:50 AM. No injuries were reported.

A potential tragedy was averted today at Jalahalli metro station in Bengaluru when a former Airforce officer from Bihar, identified as Mr Anil Kumar Pandey, attempted to jump onto the tracks of the Green Line as a metro train was approaching. The incident, which took place around 10:25 AM, caused a temporary disruption in metro services.

According to reports, Mr Pandey, approximately 49 years old, jumped onto the tracks just as the train neared the station on the Green Line’s Silk Institute to Madavara route. Eyewitnesses described how he lay between the rails, appearing to be determined to end his life. Fortunately, the metro train pilot acted quickly and applied the emergency brakes, halting the train in time to prevent a disaster.

Metro staff and rescue teams at the station immediately sprang into action, using the Emergency Trip System (ETS) to rescue the man from the tracks. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and Mr. Pandey was safely removed from the dangerous situation.

The incident temporarily disrupted metro services, with the Green Line experiencing delays for around 15 minutes. From 10:25 AM to 10:50 AM, four trains operated in a short loop between Yeshwanthpur and Silk Institute instead of the usual route extending to Madavara Metro station. By 10:50 AM, metro services on the entire Green Line were restored to normal. 

In response to the incident, a spokesperson from Namma Metro issued the following statement:

A person named Mr. ANIL KUMAR PANDEY, Ex Airforce from BIHAR aged around 49 yrs jumped on the track while the train was approaching at Jalahalli metro station today at about 10.25 hrs. Upon the incident Immediately Emergency Trip System ETS was operated and rescued by BMRCL Staff & Team.  As per preliminary information, No injuries were reported.  The normalcy of train services on the entire GREEN LINE was resumed at 10.50 hrs. From 10.25 hrs to 10.50 hrs, 4 trains were operated in a short loop between Yeshwanthpur & Slik Institute instead of up to Madavara Metro station during this period.
