Bengaluru: If you're living in Bengaluru, your monthly water bill is about to get a bit heavier. The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is increasing the water tariff by 3%, and this new rate is effective from April. For most households, this means you can expect to pay an average of ₹20 to ₹30 more each month.
The BWSSB is taking this step to pull itself out of a financial crunch. The board is struggling with the rising costs of water supply, maintenance, electricity, and infrastructure. To avoid losses, the board decided to increase the water tariff by 3% every year, just like it did last year. This hike is now being implemented from April.
This rate increase means domestic users will pay a maximum of 1 paisa more per litre. For non-domestic users, like shops and industries, the increase could be up to 1.90 paise per litre. So, while homes will see a ₹20-₹30 rise in their monthly bills, commercial establishments could face an additional burden of ₹50 to ₹60.

The board pointed out that for 11 years before 2025, water rates in the city were not increased. Meanwhile, expenses like electricity bills shot up. The BWSSB's monthly spending on water supply is around ₹200 crore, but until 2025, its collection was only about ₹120 crore per month. This led to an estimated monthly loss of ₹80 crore. That's why the decision to increase the rates by 3% annually was made in 2025.

In a separate update, the Bengaluru Solid Waste Management agency has passed a strict order. Residents must separate their garbage into wet, dry, sanitary, and special care waste. If you fail to do this and hand over mixed waste, you will be fined ₹500 for the first offence. If you make the same mistake again, the fine will be ₹1,000.
