Karnataka rains: 130 taluks in 23 districts declared as flood-hit in state

The Karnataka government declared 130 taluks in 23 districts of the state as flood affected areas. The government officials have been ordered to take up relief measures.

Bengaluru: With the loss of lives, houses, crops, and basic infrastructure due to heavy rain and floods in this August monsoon season, 130 taluks in 23 districts of Karnataka have been declared flood.

The government has made a declaration to this effect following a report by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC).

The taluks have been declared flood affected with immediate effect until further orders, the state government order said.

Due to severe rain in the state in August and heavy inflow from neighbouring Maharashtra into the Krishna basin, there were floods in several parts of North Karnataka.

During the same time there were floods in the coastal and Malnad region too, causing serious damage to infrastructure.

While rivers overflowed across the state, landslides were reported in the Western Ghats region. A major landslide had occurred in Karnataka's Kodagu district.

The landslide took the lives of five people including the chief priest of the Talacauvery temple in Kodagu.

Meanwhile, Belagavi district has the highest number of flood hit taluks. 14 taluks have been declared flood affected in Belagavi.

The least affected districts are Chamarajanagara and Mandya with just one flood-hit taluk each.

Based on the order, the government has ordered the district administration to take necessary relief measures in the taluks that have been declared flood affected in accordance with state disaster relief fund (SDRF) /NDRF norms.
