Fact Check: Vegetarians safe from coronavirus, says who?

Synopsis

A screenshot of a viral video clip is being shared with the claims that according to a WHO report, no vegetarian person in the world has been found to have contracted coronavirus

New Delhi: A post has been doing the rounds on social media claiming that the World Health Organization (WHO) has said in a report that vegetarians haven’t contracted coronavirus.

Multiple Facebook and Twitter posts shared hundreds of times claim the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that no vegetarian has contracted the novel coronavirus.

Fact check:

The fact of the matter is the WHO has not published any report that said vegetarians haven’t contracted the deadly virus.

The WHO also never asked people to stop consuming non-vegetarian food during the pandemic. In fact, it has recommended animal protein as nutrition advice for adults during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Since the COVID-19 outbreak first emerged in early 2020, health experts have stressed that people should maintain a healthy diet to avoid a weakened immune system due to poor nutrition.
