The full bench of the Election Commission including Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora arrived at Kolkata Airport on Wednesday (January 20) evening. Deputy Election Commissioner Sudip Jain arrived in the state on Wednesday afternoon to inspect the preparations for the second phase of the polls.

Although the schedule has not been announced, the opposition parties have already complained about the law and order situation in the state. This is the first time that the full bench of the poll panel has come to the state ahead of the crucial assembly elections.
A senior official of the poll panel said, “The poll panel has already asked for regular reports of law and order situation in the state, including the status of non-bailable arrest warrants and seizure of illegal arms and ammunitions, from the administration. A stern warning has also been sent out to officials that the EC won’t tolerate any dereliction of duty.”

The Deputy Election Commissioner held a meeting with the district magistrate, superintendent of police, and police commissioners last Thursday (January 14). The commission then issued guidelines stating that from now on, district magistrates and police superintendents will have to send a report to Delhi every Friday on the law and order situation of the state.
According to commission sources, Deputy Election Commissioner Sudip Jain has already submitted a report to the full bench on the preparations for the Bengal polls. It may be mentioned that on Friday (January 22), the full bench will hold a meeting with the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, Electoral Officer, Nodal Officer, and other officials involved in the administration selection process.
