Adventurer Amit Chowdhury is new UIAA chairman

Amit Chowdhury has been elected as the chairman of International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA). Apart from being Indian, Amit Chowdhury was the first Bengali to get a seat on the executive board of UIAA.  Amit Chowdhury had been serving as chair of UIAA’s safety commission since 2017. With his election to the executive board, he will be relinquishing his position at the safety commission.

Amit Chowdhury of India is elected as the chairman of the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA). He is the first Indian to be elected to the executive board. Before his election as the chairman this year, he was a member of International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA). Apart from being Indian, Amit Chowdhury was the first Bengali to get a seat on the executive board of UIAA. 

Amit Chowdhury had been serving as chair of UIAA’s safety commission since 2017. With his election to the executive board, he will be relinquishing his position at the safety commission.

Amit was Born on January 17, 1959. He had a hobby of mountaineering since childhood. However, he got the opportunity to realize the thrill of mountaineering when he came first to study at Jadavpur University. After getting admission to Jadavpur University in 1976, Amit got a chance to enjoy the thrill of mountaineering. He was admitted to learn the basics of mountaineering in an institute. He quickly got the opportunity to learn the five rules of mountaineering. Amit also started taking part in various trekking. He received training in mountaineering from the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling.

In 1980, Amit and his team successfully climbed Mount Jogin Mountain in Garhwal. In this expedition, Amit conquered the second peak of Mount Jogin. No one has set foot on that peak before Amit. 

Amit Chowdhury also took part in various mountaineering expeditions on behalf of Jadavpur University Mountaineering and Hiking Club. 

After graduating from Jadavpur University, Amit joined the Air Force in 1982. Along with this, Amit also started mountaineering on behalf of the Mountaineering and Hiking Club of the Mountaineering and Hiking Club of Jadavpur University. At this time, he was training a young mountaineer named Baldev Kanwar. Later, Baldev reached the summit of Everest. Baldev was also honored with the National Adventure Award.
