The Alipore Met office has issued a heavy rain and thunderstorm alert for West Bengal from Sunday, 16th August 2026. A low-pressure area in the North Bay of Bengal will keep the monsoon active over Gangetic West Bengal and nearby districts for the next few days.

Kolkata will have a mostly cloudy sky from Sunday morning. The city has a strong chance of getting heavy thunderstorms in one or two places from the afternoon onwards.

Maximum Temperature
If it doesn't rain, the high humidity of up to 85% will cause a lot of discomfort. The maximum temperature will be around 31°C and the minimum near 27°C. Continuous heavy rain could also lead to temporary waterlogging in low-lying areas and underpasses.
Almost all districts in South Bengal will get light to moderate rain on Sunday. But the rain will be more intense in coastal and western districts. A heavy rain alert is in place for Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, and both North and South 24 Parganas.

Bankura and West Medinipur are also under a heavy rain and storm warning. During the downpour, these districts could see gusty winds blowing at 30 to 40 km/h, sometimes even hitting 50-60 km/h.

The Met department has told fishermen not to go into the deep sea until Tuesday because the sea will be very rough. The cloudy skies will keep temperatures in these districts between 28° and 32° Celsius.

North Bengal Districts Forecast
North Bengal districts will also continue to get rain because of the monsoon, but the rainfall will increase from 17-18 August. For 16th August, the forecast predicts moderate to heavy rain with thunderstorms in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and Malda.
