The plot of Gang Leader

The story revolves around three brothers: Raghupathi (Murali Mohan), Raghava (Sarath Kumar), and Rajaram (Chiranjeevi). Raghupathi is the responsible elder, while Raghava is studying for his IAS exams. Rajaram is the carefree younger brother who roams around with his gang of four friends. He is so dedicated to his family that he even goes to jail to arrange money for his brother's education. But tragedy strikes when the city's goons, Ekambaram (Rao Gopal Rao) and Kanakambaram (Anandaraj), brutally murder Raghupathi.

How does Rajaram uncover the conspiracy behind his brother's death? And how does he, with the help of his gang and girlfriend Kanyakumari (Vijayashanti), get his revenge? The film also has a twist involving Kanyakumari's own tragic past.

Performances and Technical Brilliance

Chiranjeevi's performance as Rajaram was simply electrifying. His attitude, dance moves, and fight sequences drove the audience wild. His iconic dialogue, 'Cheyyi chusava entha rough ga undo.. rough aadinchesthaanu' (See how rough my hand is? I'll rough you up), is still legendary in Telugu cinema. Vijayashanti, as Kanyakumari, was a perfect match for him, with her impeccable comic timing. Their on-screen chemistry was a major highlight.

Nagababu's sacrifice for Chiranjeevi

Here's a fun fact: this film was not originally meant for Chiranjeevi, but for his brother Nagababu. Director Vijaya Bapineedu first planned a family drama with Nagababu, something like 'Bommarillu', and even had a title, 'Arevo Samba'.

However, Nagababu himself insisted that a mass film of this scale would be perfect only for Chiranjeevi. When the initial story didn't impress the Megastar, the Paruchuri Brothers stepped in and completely transformed it into a mass entertainer.

It's often said that if Nagababu had done this film and it became a hit, he too might have become a big commercial hero. However, the Mega family has never officially confirmed this story. The title 'Gang Leader' itself was borrowed from a popular serial written by Satyamurthy (music director Devi Sri Prasad's father) in 'Megastar' magazine.

Another interesting tidbit is that Chiranjeevi shot the famous 'Vaana Vaana Velluvaye' song while suffering from a 104-degree fever, showing his incredible professionalism.

Release Records & Box Office Tsunami

The moment 'Gang Leader' hit theatres, audiences flocked to see it. Released in 1991, the film collected a worldwide share of around ₹10 crore, becoming the highest-grossing Telugu film at the time. It ran for 100 days in over 50 centres and for more than 200 days in several major cities.

The film's 100-day celebration was a record-breaking event in itself. The team held functions in Tirupati, Hyderabad, Eluru, and Vijayawada on the same day—Chiranjeevi's birthday—travelling between cities in a special helicopter. After this massive success, Chiranjeevi started charging ₹1.25 crore per film. This made him the highest-paid actor in India, earning more than Amitabh Bachchan at the time, a fact that grabbed national headlines.
