The Union Health Ministry said on Friday that Co-WIN has created a new tool dubbed 'Know Your Customer's/Vaccination Client's Status,' or KYC-VS, that would allow a verifying organisation to determine if a person has been vaccinated against coronavirus or not. Since the country's COVID-19 immunisation programme began on January 16, 2021, almost 72 crore vaccine doses have been delivered.

Co-WIN has already issued a digitally verified certificate to each of these persons as evidence of immunisation. According to the ministry, this certificate can be kept on a digital device or stored in Digi Locker, where it can be digitally transmitted as proof of immunisation.Similarly, if such a certificate is needed (e.g., malls, office buildings, public events), it may be shown in both digital and physical formats.

However, according to the ministry, there may be times when an organisation does not need to view the whole certificate and only needs to know whether or not an individual has been vaccinated. It said that an enterprise/employer might want to know the immunisation status of its personnel to continue operations in offices, workplaces, and so on.
The railways may wish to inquire about the vaccination status of passengers who have reserved seats on trains. Airlines may wish to inquire about the vaccination status of people buying airline tickets, and/or airports may choose to allow only vaccinated passengers to pass through. According to the statement, hotels may wish to know the vaccination status of residents when they check-in or make online reservations.

Co-WIN has created a new API called 'Know Your Customer's/Vaccination Client's Status' or KYC-VS to handle these instances and any that may arise," the ministry stated in a statement.
An individual must give their cellphone number and name to access this API. They will then be given an OTP, which they must input. In reply, Co-WIN will transmit the following answer to the verifying entity regarding the individual's immunisation status:
— Person has not been vaccinated
— Person has been partially vaccinated
— Person has been completely vaccinated

According to the government, this response will be digitally signed and can be shared with the verifying body immediately. The KYC-VS is consent-based and privacy-preserving. In addition, the Co-WIN Team has developed a webpage with the API, which can be integrated into any system to assist speedy integration and adoption. According to the statement, this will allow for rapid integration with any system.
