Signal, the popular messaging software that gained popularity earlier this year as a result of WhatsApp's policy debacle, is currently unavailable owing to technical issues. Signal has confirmed the outage and said its staff are trying to restore service. Signal, which is known for its encrypted texting, has been unavailable to many users since Sunday night. Downdetector, an outage tracking service, reported a surge in outage reports on Monday morning, with over 1,200 complaints. The bulk of the outages in the United States are depicted on Downdetector's outage map. It is unknown how widespread the outage was in India, as Downdetector only shows Signal outages in the United States. Still, numerous users on Twitter have reported problems with the encrypted messaging app.

"Signal is having technical problems. We're working diligently to get the service back up and running as soon as possible." a notice on the app stated. According to the company's tweet, the outage is caused by a hosting issue affecting sections of its service. "We're working on getting it back up and running," the message says. According to Downdetector, around 43 per cent of overall outage reports revealed app difficulties, 36 per cent had issues sending messages, and approximately 20 per cent had server issues. According to the website, user reports suggest that Signal has been experiencing problems since 11:05 PM EDT on Sunday.

Signal is an encrypted messaging software that competes with WhatsApp, which Facebook owns. Signal got a lot of new users earlier this year after WhatsApp changed its terms of service. Signal was created by the Signal Foundation, a non-profit organisation. The app was built in 2014 as a privacy-focused messenger. End-to-end encryption is used in the app, which is accessible for all Android and iOS devices. The last time Signal went down was in July of this year.
