Amid ragas and royals, Mysuru swoons over Wadiyar wedding
FollowRoyal marriages are often fabulously luxurious, with conventions which is completely remote from common customs. But that is not the case for Wadiyar dynasty of Mysore. The entire city of Mysuru, as well as most of Karnataka celebrates their weddings.
This connection with the royal family has been long cultivated. The princely state of Mysore had imbibed the values of democracy much before democracy was adapted as the norm for the nation. Even prior to Independence, the Mysore Wadiyars had introduced caste-based reservations, a modern education system, electricity to villages and democratic reforms in their administration.
The new prince, Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, is getting married to Trishaka Kumari of Dongarpur Royal family of Rajastan on 27th June 2016. The palace is witnessing a marriage after 40 years.
This is the third 'out of Karnataka' marriage in the dynasty. On 6 June 1900, Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV married Sri Pratapa Kumari of the Kathiawar region of Gujarat. On 15 May 1938, Maharaja Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar married Maharani Sathya Prema Kumari of Jaipur.
As a special treat, celebrated musicians Mysuru Manjunath and Mysuru Nagaraj have invented a new raga for the occasion and will sing it for the first time at the Durbar Hall. The raga is named as 'Yaduveer Manohari' and derived from the Kantamani raga.
The royal family has a long association with music, and Jayachamaraja Wadiyar was an acclaimed composer.
All the rooms of Hotel Radisson Blue and Lalit Mahal Palace are booked for the guests of Dongarpur family. Currently, around 86 royal families have occupied the rooms and have been quite a sight for the citizens of Mysuru.
Invitations have been sent out for PM Narendra Modi, Governor Vajubhai Vala, CM Siddaramaiah and all state ministers. Invitations have also been sent to the embassies of France, Germany and Switzerland.
