The Election Commission on Tuesday (March 9) transferred West Bengal DGP Virendra ahead of the assembly polls in the state.


The Election Commission on Tuesday (March 9) transferred West Bengal DGP Virendra ahead of the assembly polls in the state.

In a letter to Bengal Chief Secretary, the Election Commission wrote, "P Nirajnayan, IPS be posted as Director General & IGP of West Bengal in place of Virendra, IPS with immediate effect."

“Virendra, IPS should not be given any post which directly or indirectly relates to the conduct of the election. Compliance of the commission's order may be done immediately,” the letter added.

The Election Commission took this decision after several political parties complained that Virendra was in favour of the ruling Trinamool Congress and will be biased toward them in the polls.

The commission had recently removed Jawed Shamim from the post of ADG (Law and Order) of West Bengal and replaced him with Jagmohan.
