The Election Commission said, “It is completely incorrect to suggest that the Commission has taken over the law and order machinery in the state in the name of conducting elections and appropriated the whole governance structure, etc.”

The Election Commission was responding to a memorandum sent to it by a TMC delegation in regards to the attack on Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram.

Meanwhile, after getting injured in Nandigram, Mamata Banerjee herself alleged conspiracy. Since the administrative power of the state is under the purview of the commission due to the effectiveness of the electoral code of conduct, the commission is held responsible for the whole incident.

The Trinamool Congress claimed that it was a "deep conspiracy to kill the Trinamool supremo". The commission, however, dismissed the allegations as baseless. According to commission sources, some special plans may be taken for the security of VVIPs like the Prime Minister-Chief Minister. The outline of which has already begun.

In its letter, the Election Commission said the Nandigram incident involving Mamata Banerjee is "indeed an unfortunate incident and needs to be inquired into with promptitude and dispatch".

"Having said that, it is rather unfortunate that the memorandum in question (sent by TMC) is full of insinuations and averments, which in fact questions the very basis of creation and function if the Election Commission," the Commission said.

The commission said the decision to remove DG Birendra was based on the recommendations of its observers. But the Trinamool is trying to find a link between that decision and the Chief Minister's injury.

Even in the wake of the Nandigram incident, the commission held a video conference with all the district magistrates and police superintendents. According to commission sources, in a video conference, ADG Law and Order asked the Chief Minister and the Prime Minister to be especially vigilant about security.

Partha Chatterjee has also complained that the law and order situation in the state is deteriorating under the Election Commission. Not only that, the National Election Commission on Friday sent a report of the whole incident to the Chief Secretary of the state. On Friday, two state-appointed police observers, Vivek Dubey and Ajay Naik, will meet the district governors and police superintendents of East Midnapore, West Midnapore and Jhargram.
