PSLV C49 deploys India's new eye in the sky EOS-01 and 9 other satellites

ISRO's trusted workhorse, PSLV C49 took off from the first launchpad at Sriharikota at 3.12pm today.

The earth observation (surveillance) satellite of Risat series codenamed ‘EOS-01’ will augment applications in agriculture, forestry and disaster management support. The EOS-01 has a synthetic aperture radar that will provide all-weather and day-and-night observation capability. It can also see through clouds The new 'eye in the sky' will also boost the military's surveillance capability from space and help the security forces keep a hawk eye on the borders.

In its 51st flight, PSLV-C49 also deployed nine foreign satellites including a technology demonstrator R2 satellite from Lithuania, four Kleos (KSM-1A/1B/1C/1D) satellites from Luxembourg for maritime applications and four Lemur (Lemur-1/2/3/4) satellites from the United States for multi-mission remote sensing application.

This is the first Indian launch by the ISRO this year. Space launches had been restricted ever since the country went into lockdown. ISRO's communication satellite Gsat-30 was the only satellite launched this year on January 17. However, Gsat-30 was launched from the European spaceport in French Guiana.
