12-year-old Mumbai boy wins global recognition for environment-related project

According to a media statement released on Wednesday, Ayaan Shankta earned third place in the 8-14 age group for his project Conservation and Rehabilitation of Powai Lake.


Ayaan Shankta, a 12-year-old environmental activist from Mumbai, has been awarded the 2021 International Young Eco-Hero in honour of his efforts to address difficult environmental challenges. According to a media statement released on Wednesday, Ayaan Shankta earned third place in the 8-14 age group for his project Conservation and Rehabilitation of Powai Lake.

He is one of 25 young environmental activists worldwide named by Action For Nature (AFN) as a 2021 International Young Eco-Hero, an award given to eco-conscious kids aged 8 to 16 who are making critical efforts to tackle complex environmental challenges.

Ayaan told the reporters that he aims to restore the lake to its former glory as a clean and lively body of water. He lives near a lake that was once a source of drinking water for Mumbai but has since become a landfill for waste and sewage. He claims that it would not only assist restore ecological balance in the densely populated metropolis of Mumbai, but it will also contribute in the conservation of endangered species.

His effort is to increase pollution awareness, clean up the lake, and conserve its environment. Ayaan has written an action report on lake conditions and is now working on a documentary on Powai Lake, in addition to working with NGOs to raise awareness and arrange clean-ups.
Action For Nature, the international non-profit organization, encourages young people to nurture a love and respect for the Earth and to take personal action to improve the environment.
