“Cottons Jaipur” is a clothing line attempted to portray a bit of the tradition for its Onam collection, which went astray and drew the ire of social media.

The Malayali community celebrates Onam, God's own country's largest festival, with zeal. Some of its well-known traditions include donning the traditional kasavu and a feast with specific foods known as the "Sadhya". The brand, “Cottons Jaipur”, is a clothing line attempted to portray a bit of the tradition for its Onam collection, which went astray and drew the ire of social media.

In its advertising photos, the brand displayed two models dressed in white and gold salwar suits enjoying a Sadhya dinner that included South Indian delicacies like dosa and idli, which social media users pointed out do not fit in the traditional Sadhya. Some Twitter users stated that brands should not "use" cultures about which they have no knowledge.

Honestly - its a waste of a sadya opportunity, if they have dosai and idli in it. where is the kalan, olan, avial, pachadi, erisseri? To each their own, i guess. 🤷🏽

Onam is a South Indian festival, idli and dosae - South Indian ; same same 🙂🙃

By that yardstick we should serve 'sarson da saag' to Biharis for 'chhatt puja' and 'litti chokha' to the Punjabis for 'lohri'. Same same.

Any part of south = Idli + dosa + chutney + white gold + maligai

Following private messages from social media users, the apparel business removed their Instagram picture portraying the Onam Sadhya. Their Facebook post, on the other hand, has not been removed. Onam Sadhya is a multi-course vegetarian lavish feast that is often served on banana leaves with people sitting cross-legged on the floor.
