In a distressing incident, a 17-year-old girl is in critical condition after a spurned lover set her on fire in Pathanamthitta on Friday.

Shari, a native of Kadammanitta in the district, has been admitted to the Kottayam Medical College with 80 per cent burns, according to Asianet News. The police said her ex-boyfriend Sajil, 20, who also lives in the neighbourhood, is absconding after committing the crime.

The police said the crime was an act of revenge. It is understood that the two were in a relationship for some time but Shari had recently decided to end it. 

The incident happened on Friday evening when Shari was alone at home. Sajil, who was in the area, asked Shari to meet him but she refused to. Enraged, he barged into her house, poured petrol on her and set her ablaze.

Shari was initially admitted to a hospital in Pathanamthitta but was later shifted to the Kottayam Medical College.
