Munnar eviction drive: CM reprimands collector for demolishing cross

Synopsis

A team led by collector GR Gokul and sub-collector V Sriram demolished the cross  CM Pinarayi Vijayan will hold a meeting on Friday to discuss the Munnar issue

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday slammed the demolition of a cross in Munnar as part of an eviction drive, hours after an official team led by Idukki district collector GR Gokul took it down.

A team led by Gokul and Devikulam sub-collector V Sriram demolished the cross at Pappathichola and clamped down prohibitory orders in the area.

Pinarayi reportedly reprimanded the collector, saying the eviction team should have exhibited more caution while dealing with the incident. The CM stressed that the officials could have put up a board near the cross if the area belonged to the government, instead of taking it down, adding that demolition is not the LDF government’s policy.

The CM will hold a meeting on Friday to discuss the Munnar issue.

CPM district secretary KK Jayachandran had criticised the act earlier in the day, terming it as hooliganism.
