The recent raids conducted by Income Tax (IT) Department has revealed how a cop-turned businessman used his connections to amass wealth. MKR Pillai, the Additional SP in Nagaland used his police connections to build a vast network of apartments, flats, restaurants, jewellery, bakeries, finance companies, textile shops, etc. across the country.
IT sleuths had unearthed black money to the tune of ₹400 crore from various business divisions of Sreevalsam group owned by him. It was also found that he has been smuggling gold, currency and other commodities to Kerala in the safety of police trucks for more than 10 years. IT sleuths found a police truck parked in front of the office of Sreevalsam Group.
Pillai joined Nagaland police as a constable and rose up to the rank of Additional Superintendent of Police. He started Sreevalsam Group in 2003. The group has diversified interests in textiles, gold loan, textile and vehicle leadership. The group also owns schools and resorts in Kerala and other states.
The group had purchased land in Pandalam, Mavelikkara, Thiruvananthapuram, Harippad and Konni recently.
IT Department decided to conduct raids after Pillai revealed that he had assets worth ₹50 crores. However, the Department grew suspicious as to how a police officer can amass wealth to this tune and decided to check into it.
The raids were conducted at 20 business divisions of the group and the residences of Pillai and his relatives. It was found that he has amassed wealth to the tune of ₹1000 crore.
He owns three apartments in New Delhi, a business establishment and two flats in Bengaluru and properties worth ₹400 crore in Kerala, Karnataka, Nagaland and Tamil Nadu. The group also owns a gold loan firm with five branches and five jewellery shops.
