Kerala mother seeks rescue of daughter who converted, joined ISIS

Kerala High Court received a writ petition from a woman seeking a directive to the Central government and Union Ministry of External Affairs to take steps to rescue her daughter from the custody of ISIS. 

The woman asked the court to help rescue and repatriate her daughter and 10-month-old baby from the clutches of Islamic State. In the petition, Bindu Sampath, a native of Thiruvananthapuram said that her daughter Nimisha, who chose the name Fathima after converting to Islam, and her baby girl Ummukolusu had been detained by the terror group in Afghanistan. 

She states that the girl was converted forcibly, trapped and misled and was taken to Afghan against her will. The mother also said that her daughter is now eager to return home and got a message that Nimisha is in Afghanistan. 

The petitioner also met Union Minister and requested to take measures to save her daughter. She also said that the lives of her daughter and grandchild were in danger. The woman also approached Prime Minister's office with the same request. 

The missing case of Nimisha, a final year BDS student at a dental college in Kasargod, was the first one to report from the state. Bindu approached police and said that her daughter, son-in-law and his brother went missing in May 2016 and that her daughter was then pregnant. 

Nimisha had married Isa (Bexon Vincent), a Christian youth from Palakkad, after both converted to Islam. On inquiry, it was found that his brother Bestin too had converted to Islam and chose the name Yahia, and got married to Merlin, who chose to convert while working with IBM and took the name, Mariam. 

All of them left for Srilanka in May 2016 and moved to Afghanistan from there.    

Further probe revealed that as many as 22 persons, including women and children, are missing from the state and NIA later confirmed that they left for Afghanistan to join ISIS.
