Chengannur bypoll: Saji Cheriyan wins, LDF celebrates victory

Synopsis

The counting of the vote started at 8 AM, and interestingly, LDF maintained the lead from the first round and and even till the end of counting did not slip to the second place, even once.

With the victory of Saji Cheriyan in bypoll, the LDF has tasted success in all panchayats in Chengannur. The Left Front's Saji Cheriyan won the by-election with a majority of 20,956 votes.

The counting of the vote started at 8 AM, and interestingly, LDF maintained the lead from the first round and even till the end of counting did not slip to the second place, even once.  

The Left Front amassed votes even from regions which were considered strongholds of BJP and Congress. There were 40  postal votes and all of them were cast for the LDF.

The LDF candidate Saji Cherian has got a total of 67,303 votes, UDF candidate advocate D Vijayakumar got 46,347 votes and BJP candidate advocate PS Sreedharan Pillai received 35,270 votes.

UDF candidate Vijayakumar and BJP candidate PS Sreedharan Pillai had admitted their defeat even before the announcement of the results. Vijayakumar had said yesterday that the party and its activists had failed in campaigning.
