The elderly woman was alone at the house at Kandiyoor in Mavelikara on Wednesday night when someone broke in and assaulted her. The victim suffered severe injuries to her face and private parts.

The incident came to light on Thursday morning when the woman’s daughter returned after attending a festival at the nearby Chettikulangara Devi Temple the previous night.

The woman was initially admitted to the Mavelikara district hospital but was shifted to Alappuzha general hospital, when her condition was found to be serious.

The police have taken a man into custody after a mobile phone registered under his name was found from the victim's house, though it is understood that he was not the one who attacked the woman.
