Bengaluru has a long, and proud, history of citizen activism. From the groups defending trees on Jayamahal road to the massive outpouring of citizen activism against the steel flyover, the city is active and eager.
So it is natural that the various citizens' groups in Bengaluru wish to turn around the city's pathetic history of abuse and destruction of its lakes. Bengaluru's lakes (one of which routinely catches on fire!) are a great stain on the city. Uncontrolled pollution and general maltreatment have turned them into stinking hazards for health. And routinely encroachments sometimes swallow entire lakes.
In a bid to try to take control of the situation, several citizens' groups are uniting under the banner 'United Bengaluru'. The logic is simple - it has been proven time and time again that unless there is a united fight, authorities and agencies do not listen to legitimate demands. The first step in such a hoped united fight is a new meet between all concerned parties.
The May 13th event at Townhall, between 10.30 am and 1.30 pm, is all about Bengaluru's citizens coming together. The interactive session will see the participation of the Citizens Action Forum (NS Mukunda), Citizens for Bengaluru (Prakash Belawadi, Naresh Narasimhan), Forward Foundation, Praja, Bangalore Environmental Trust (Yellappa Reddy), Namma Bengaluru Foundation (Sridhar Pabbisetty) and other NGOs/ RWAs/ lake activists of Bengaluru
The aim is to reclaim and protect the city's lakes.
Other dignitaries who will be part of the session are Shri. H S Doreswamy, Shri. A T Ramaswamy, Shri. V Balasubramanian, Dr Hita Unnikrishnan (Azim Premji University), Ms Shuba Ramachandran (Biome), among others.
So if you feel you must have a voice and a role in saving the city's lakes, this event is the place to be this Saturday.
