Bengaluru rains: 195 tanks on the brink of overflowing

The incessant rains from the past one month has filled up most of the 195 tanks in the City with some already over-flowing and some on the verge of breaching the bund. Another couple of more days of heavy downpour will prove to be disastrous for the city, reports Kannada Prabha.

Till now, only the Raja Kaluve and drainage used to overflow but now majority of the tanks are overflowing. Already Dubasipalya tank at Kengeri, Doddabidarakundi tank at Tumakru Road is overflowing, flooding the surrounding areas. At KSRTC bus stand on Kengeri-Mysuru Road, buses were finding it difficult to wade through the water. Boats were pressed into service to rescue stranded people. The Vrushabhavathi canal running alongside also joined the over flowing tank bringing traffic to a halt on the stretch till 12 pm. The traffic jam also created hurdles to commuters. Kengeri received a record rain of 14.6 cm, on Saturday night.

In Kengeri, Kommaghtta tank overflowed flooding Vishveshwarayya Layout. Hundreds of houses were flooded and fish from the tank were seen being washed out. A few residents were seen rejoicing to find fish at their doorsteps. On Tumakuru Road, the Doddabidarakundi tank overflowed inundating Bhavani Nagara, Annaporneshwari Nagar, flooding hundreds of houses. The water also flowed on to Nelamanagala Road, converting it into a river, causing traffic congestion.

Of the 195 tanks in the City Hosakere Halli Kere, Channammana Kere, Halagevaderahalli Kere, Kempambudi Kere, Herohalli kere and a few more are already flowing to the brim and are on the verge of breaching its bund. This has threatened to flood the low-lying areas near the tanks.  In Cox Town and Jeevana Halli, two houses collapsed due to heavy rain. However, no casualties were reported. Three more houses adjoining this house have also developed cracks. Tavarekere reported 126 mm rain; Ramahalli 125 mm, Kaggalipura 120 mm, Hemmigepura 107mm, Chilanayakanahalli 106 mm, H Gollahalli 104 mm, Rajarajeshwari Nagar 84 mm, Uttarahalli 67 mm, Chunchanakuppe 65 mm and Konanakunte 67 mm rain was recorded, reports Kannada Prabha.

In HSR Layout, Koramangala 4^th phase, HBR layout, Vijaya Bank Layout at Bannerghatta, Jnanabharathi Layout and Srigandha Kaval received heavy rains with water flooding at least 70 houses. The areas turned into island and had people holding placards saying “Help Us.”
