Medical education fee to increase by 10 per cent for the next 3 years

Giving in to the lobbying of private medical institutions, the State has increased the medical education fees Medical Education Ministers says the fee in State is lowest compared to neighbouring states. From the current education year 360 extra medical seats will be available taking the total to 3,500 seats. Quotas fixed in private medical colleges are 40 pc Government, 40 pc Administration and 20 pc NRI. Deemed university quota seats allotted on national basis.

The medical education aspirants have another shocker from the government: the State Government has yielded to private medical colleges lobby and increased the fee by 10 percent.  It has also agreed for annual increase of 10 per cent for the next 3 years.  This is the third consecutive year that the State Government is increasing medical education fee.

After a meeting with the representatives of private medical colleges administration, at Vidhana Soudha on Wednesday, Medical Education Minister Dr Sharan Prakash Patil told newspersons that compared to neighbouring states, Karnataka has the lowest fees for medical education.  Hence the private medical colleges had requested for increase in fees.  Responding to this the State has agreed to increase the fees by 10 per cent every year for the 4 years including this year, he said, reported Kannada Prabha. An agreement will soon be signed in this regard, reported Kannada Prabha.

Currently, the students admitted under administration quota pay a fee of Rs 5.75 lakhs. Next year it is going to be Rs 6.35 lakhs.  The student admitted under government quota pays a fee of Rs 70,000 and it will increase to RS 77,000. In the same manner 10 per cent will be added every year.

From the current year 360 additional medical seats are available taking the total number of seats to 35000. NEET exam results are already announced and soon lists will be prepared and sent to colleges for seat allocation. In the past 3 years 1500 additional medical seats are available.

In private medical colleges, the government quota is 40 per cent, administration quota is 40 per cent and the NRI quota is 20 per cent. For minority community colleges the government quota is 20 per cent, administration quota is 50 per cent and NRI quota is 25 per cent. All seats under Deemed Universities will be allotted on national basis, the Minister said, reported Kannada Prabha.
