DySP Ganapathy suicide: Kapil Sibal to argue for minister George in Supreme Court?

Former DySP MK Ganapathy's suicide is back to haunt Bengaluru development minister KJ George. According to reports, the senior Karnataka minister has sought the help of Senior Congress leader and Supreme Court advocate Kapil Sibal.

DySP Ganapathy in July 2016 had squarely blamed then home minister KJ George of allegedly harassing him and pushing him to the brink.

While the CID inquiry is on into the case, Ganapathy's family members have now appealed to the Supreme Court and sought a CBI inquiry. Following this, the State government apparently does not want to take any chances and has decided to appoint a "legal eagle" to bail out minister George. It is reported that Kapil Sibal is expected to argue for the State government, Kannada Prabha reported citing sources.

It may be recalled here that Ganapathy was found hanging from a ceiling fan at a lodge in Madikeri on July 7, 2016. Hours before his death, Ganapathy had alleged to a local television channel that minister George and his senior Pranab Mohanty were harassing him and had stated that "they would be responsible if something happens to him."

Despite the Opposition parties' cry for George's resignation, the Siddaramaiah government did not budge. Instead, George was moved from the Home portfolio.

Amidst the uproar over the officer's death, the government handed over the case to the CID. However, the family has sought for a CBI inquiry into the death of Ganapathy. Their appeals to the State government fell flat on the grounds that the CID was already investigating. The family then moved the single judge bench in the high court but in vain. The family has now filed a special leave petition seeking CBI inquiry into Ganapathy's suicide. The Apex Court which has allowed the petition is expected to hear the case on September 1 or September 2, reports Kannada Prabha.
