The fair price shops will transform into service centres, where one can not only get ration but also book flight, train and bus tickets, said Food and Civil Supplies Minister UT Khader.

All fair price shops in the state will soon work as a service centre for issuing travel tickets. An agreement in this regard is on the cards, and the service is expected to start in another 15 days. This will help the owners of the fair price shop earn at least Rs 20,000 more than what they are earning now, said the Minister.

The ration cards have been attached to the Aadhaar number, and Karnataka is the first state to achieve 100 percent linking of ration cards to the Aadhaar card, he said. No leakage in the ration card system has ensured a saving worth Rs 50,000 crore per annum.

He also spoke about cancelling the Below Poverty Line (BPL) and Above Poverty Line (APL) sections in the state. Now onwards, those in the BPL category will come under the preference groups with Rs 1,20,000 annual income, he added.
