After Gadag plastic sugar reported in Hassan sample sent to Mysore lab for test

After Itagi, Gadag district, in Hassan too plastic sugar has been reported.  Following a report by a consumer, the officials of Department of Food Safety and Food Quality rushed to the grocery store in the City and confiscated plastic sugar being sold at the store.

Shivakumar, an employee of Railway Police Department, resident of Rangoli Halli, had purchased 3 KG of sugar from a private grocery store near Old Bus Stand. When it was used in the tea, the family found that the sugar did not dissolve at all.

He put the sugar in water to test and again it did not dissolve. Suspecting foul play he returned it to the store keeper.  

Later he informed about it to the Food and Civil Supplies Department.  The officials immediately rushed to the store and confiscated the sugar and have sent it to Mysore Lab for chemical testing.

Minister's visit

Soon after hearing the news, district in-charge Minister A Manju visited the store and made inquiries about the source of procuring the sugar. He said, stringent action would be taken against the culprits, if the consumer lodges a complaint.

Aravind, the owner of the store, said he had procured the sugar from Chikkodi and that he had nothing to do with the adulteration. His shop has been serving consumers since 60 years and has never known to serve adulterated groceries, he said.

Basave Gowda, Food Safety and Quality Officer, said sample of the plastic sugar has been sent to Mysore lab for chemical testing and after the results they would know more facts.
