The Karnataka government is taking a significant step towards strengthening public healthcare by expanding dialysis services under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao stated that the introduction of an artificial intelligence (AI)-based monitoring system will play a crucial role in enhancing treatment quality, ensuring patient safety, and bringing government-run dialysis services closer to private-sector standards.
The minister was speaking at the launch of an AI-powered smart monitoring system set up by NephroPlus at KC General Hospital. He noted that the integration of AI technology into dialysis services under the PPP model marks a major advancement in healthcare delivery.
“With this system, the dialysis services provided under the PPP scheme are becoming comparable to those in the private sector,” he said.
Dinesh Gundu Rao also highlighted that the government is already collaborating with private firms to expand the use of AI in healthcare. The newly introduced system will be monitored over a two-month period, after which it is expected to be rolled out to other government hospitals across the state based on its performance.
Rohit Singh, CEO of NephroPlus, emphasised the importance of continuous monitoring in dialysis care.
“Continuous monitoring is essential in dialysis treatment. This AI system helps maintain uniform quality across all centres while improving safety and reliability for patients,” he said.
The technology has been introduced at KC General Hospital to further strengthen the government’s PPP dialysis initiative.
The AI-based system enables real-time monitoring of key patient parameters during dialysis, including blood pressure, fluid removal, and electrolyte balance. This continuous observation significantly improves both treatment outcomes and patient safety.
In addition, the system evaluates 28 other critical parameters, such as patient care standards, safety protocols, bed availability, staff alerts, emergency preparedness, infection control, cleanliness, and overall operational performance. This data-driven approach allows healthcare providers and administrators to make informed decisions quickly and effectively.
Unlike traditional time-based monitoring methods, this system offers an always-on, real-time tracking mechanism, marking a major technological upgrade in dialysis care.
Currently, the system operates with an accuracy range of 85 to 95 per cent, with further improvements expected over time. A live demonstration of the AI-powered dashboards was also conducted during the launch event.
NephroPlus operates 521 dialysis centres across more than 328 cities in five countries. The company provides dialysis services to approximately 36,550 patients every month, making it one of the largest networks of its kind.
