The temperature across Karnataka has been rising steadily over the past few days, with the India Meteorological Department warning that the upward trend is likely to continue in the coming days. The situation is particularly concerning in North Karnataka, where temperatures are expected to soar further, potentially disrupting daily life and posing health risks to vulnerable groups. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and take necessary precautions to cope with the intense heat.
In the capital city of Bengaluru, the weather is expected to remain dry, with maximum temperatures ranging between 35°C and 37°C. While mornings and evenings may offer some relief with relatively cooler conditions, afternoons are likely to be significantly warmer, making outdoor activities uncomfortable.
Several districts in North Karnataka, including Kalaburagi, are likely to experience extreme heat, with temperatures expected to touch 42°C. The Meteorological Department has also issued a warning about a possible heatwave in the region. Residents have been advised to avoid stepping out between 12 pm and 4 pm, when the heat is at its peak. Senior citizens, children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions are particularly at risk and should take extra care.
In coastal districts such as Mangaluru and Udupi, high humidity levels are expected to make the weather feel extremely uncomfortable. Even if temperatures do not rise sharply, the moisture in the air will create a sticky and oppressive atmosphere, leading to excessive sweating and discomfort.
The Malnad region, particularly parts of Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru districts, may witness cloudy skies with a possibility of light showers in isolated areas. Minimum temperatures in these regions are expected to remain between 20°C and 22°C, offering relatively cooler conditions compared to other parts of the state.
The weather department has issued a public advisory, especially for residents of North Karnataka. People are urged to stay indoors during peak heat hours from 12 pm to 4 pm, drink plenty of water, wear light-coloured clothing, and avoid direct exposure to sunlight to prevent heat-related illnesses.
In response to the extreme heat conditions, the state government has revised working hours for its offices in nine districts. These include Kalaburagi, Bidar, Yadgir, Raichur, Koppal, Ballari, and Vijayanagara from the Kalaburagi revenue division, along with Vijayapura and Bagalkote from the Belagavi revenue division.
The new office timings will be from 8:00 am to 1:30 pm, effective from April 1, and will remain in place during the summer months of April and May. The government has directed officials to ensure uninterrupted public services despite the revised schedule. Employees have also been instructed to attend to any urgent duties assigned by District Collectors or Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officers without time constraints.
