Karnataka: IMD Cyclone Alert Triggers 61-Day Fishing Ban in Coastal Districts

The Karnataka government has imposed a 61-day ban on mechanised fishing in coastal districts following an IMD warning of a possible cyclone and heavy rainfall. Water sports and tourist boating activities have also been suspended as a safety measure.

With pre-monsoon rains continuing to lash coastal Karnataka and the India Meteorological Department issuing a warning of a possible cyclone and heavy rainfall, the Dakshina Kannada district administration has announced strict precautionary measures to ensure public safety.

Acting on the alert, the District Collector has imposed a complete ban on mechanised fishing for 61 days, from June 1 to July 31, both days included. The restriction applies to all mechanised boats using nets or fishing gear, as well as motorised boats with engines above 10 horsepower. The ban covers territorial waters extending up to 12 nautical miles from the coastline.

Permitted Fishing Activities During Ban Period

During the ban period, traditional non-motorised boats and motorised boats with engines up to 10 horsepower will be permitted for coastal fishing activities. These vessels may also be used for essential transportation purposes where necessary.

Strict Action Against Violations

The Fisheries Department has warned that strict action will be taken against anyone violating the order. Fishermen and vessels found breaching the restrictions will be penalised under the Karnataka Marine Fishing Regulation Act, 1986. In addition, they will be barred from availing subsidised tax-free diesel from the government for one year.

The Joint Director of the Fisheries Department has urged all fishermen in the coastal region to strictly adhere to the guidelines and cooperate with the authorities.

Water Sports and Tourism Activities Suspended

In addition to fishing restrictions, the district administration has also suspended all water sports activities in view of the cyclone and heavy rainfall forecast issued by the IMD.

Boating services have been halted at Gokarna, Murdeshwar, and Karwar beaches. Water sports activities at Gokarna’s Om Beach, Kudle Beach, Half Moon Beach, and Paradise Beach have been suspended. Scuba diving activities at Netrani Island have also been temporarily banned.

Tourist boating in the Sharavathi backwaters and the Aghanashini River has been stopped, while the setting up of pre-wedding photo shoots at Apsarakonda Beach has also been restricted.

Authorities have issued a strict advisory urging tourists and fishermen to stay away from beaches and riverbanks until further notice.
